Evidence-based medicine (EBM) is a process that seeks to integrate the best research evidence with clinical expertise and patient values to optimize clinical outcomes for our patients. As the amount of medical knowledge rapidly grows, it is imperative for clinicians to gain and apply skills in EBM in an effort to efficiently and effectively utilize information in the care of their patients.

The goal of this course is to help physicians learn how to integrate evidence-based medicine into practice.

The course is organized in 3 units: 

Unit 1: Use of Clinical Questions

Upon completion of Unit 1, you will be able to:

  • Generate clinical questions from clinical scenarios using the PICO framework
  • List common search tools and databases
  • Utilize available search tools to effectively locate the best evidence

Unit 2: Evaluating Therapy Articles

Upon completion of Unit 2, you will be able to:

  • Assess the validity of a research article on therapy 
  • Analyze the data from a therapy article to determine its importance
  • Apply and incorporate significant findings into clinical practice 

Unit 3: Analyzing Systematic Reviews

Upon completion of Unit 3, you will be able to:

  • Identify the 5 basic questions used to assess the validity of a systematic review article 
  • Interpret data, including tests of heterogeneity and the use of forest plots, to analyze the importance of the results of a systematic review 
  • Apply and incorporate significant findings into clinical practice
